California lawmakers have rejected a voter suppression bill, which to no one’s surprise, is sponsored by a Republican, Assemblymember Carl DeMaio of San Diego. As far as I am aware, California’s voting is okay as it is, and frankly, I feel like voting should be easier, not any harder. Any effort to make voting more difficult is simply put, voter suppression. There is no evidence CA elections are insecure, so um yeah, we do not need bullshit laws to make voting any harder. The bill, known as AB 25, would have required “proof” of citizenship by providing documents for first time voters and for registered voters to provide photo identification, at least for those voting in person. For those who vote by mail, the last 4 digits of identification would need to be provided; the current standard is just using a signature.
