No matter what part of the country you’re in, the stereotype for farmers (especially in the Central Valley) is that they’re Trump supporters, and for the most part, this is true. Rural populations are overwhelmingly Trump supporters, as any county map for US elections will show you. While it is always mind boggling that people could vote for such an incompetent sleezebag, it is even more mind-boggling that farmers thought it was a good idea in the 2024 election cycle. Trump’s promised tariffs were already known to be harmful, especially to farmers. Now? They’re worse than expected, with a slew of other moves that hurt farmers even more.
Trump’s waste of water last month ended up hurting small farmers by dumping water into the grounds of super rich farms instead. Trump’s deportation of undocumented immigrants will also hurt farmers, as half of their workforce consist of undocumented immigrants. Finally, Trump’s tariffs have prompted an economical war with countries, including Mexico, Canada, and China, which both send materials we need (fertilizer is one of them) and were previously happy to get our crops.
